fade

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(v.) In editing or production, to gradually reduce or increase visual or audio intensity, moving to or from blackness and silence. Commonly used phrases are fade in, fade out, and fade to black. To fade in is to bring the levels up gradually from blackness or silence to a normal brightness and volume, and to fade out is to reverse this process. In compressed video, very slow fades often create undesirable artifacts and “blockiness.” Quick cuts are preferred for this reason.
