leveler

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) A dynamic audio processor that maintains the strength of one audio signal at a constant level based upon the level of a second audio signal. The source of the second signal is often a microphone picking up ambient noise. The leveler monitors the background noise, dynamically increasing and decreasing the main audio signal as necessary to maintain a constant loudness differential between the two signals. The main signal might be a speaker’s microphone in a noisy room.
