These are chord symbols used in Jazz and Popular music styles to indicate the harmony. They are placed above the staff, and provide a pianist or guitarist with the information they need to voice the chords. They also give an improvisor clues as to the notes they might use when soloing. The most basic lead sheet symbols show the chord root and quality, while more advanced symbols indicate the upper extensions and alterations to be used. Refer to the Lead Sheet Symbols guide in the Materials to see how different chords are notated.
