A string instrument similar to the viola d’amore, but larger, with six bowed strings and sympathetic strings behind the fingerboard that can be plucked with the thumb. The fingerboard is fretted, and the neck surrounds the sympathetic strings. Haydn composed over a hundred baryton trios for his patron, Prince Esterhazy.
