microphone pattern

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) The sensitivity of a microphone to the direction of sound sources in relation to the axis of the microphone body. Sounds that originate directly in front of the microphone’s diaphragm have greater intensity and fuller frequency response than sounds that emanate from the side. The cardioid microphone has excellent off-axis rejection, which is desirable in some recording situations.
