AES3 interface

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) Formerly known as the AES/EBU interface, the AES3 designation clarifies that isolation is a feature of the interface, which the EBU specification did not provide. It is the serial transmission format standardized for professional digital audio signals in the 1992 publication: “AES Recommended Practice for Digital Audio Engineering—Serial Transmission Format for Two-Channel Linearly Represented Digital Audio Data.” It specifies time division multiplex for data, and balanced line drivers to transmit two channels of digital audio data on a single twisted-pair cable using three-pin XLR connectors. The American National Standards Institute originally issued it as ANSI S4.40-1985. The consumer version of this format is referred to as s/pdif.
