Category 5 [CAT5]

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) The industry standard name for unshielded twisted pair (UTP) data grade cable, usually with 24AWG wire. CAT 5 cable runs are limited to 100 meters (328 feet) due to signal radiation and attenuation considerations. Longer runs are vulnerable to interference. CAT 5 cables support applications with data transfer rates up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps). The most common application is connecting Ethernet systems.
