chroma key

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) A video effect created by shooting objects against a monochrome background, the color of which is “keyed” out so it can be replaced with images from another source. Foreground objects appear to be juxtaposed over the new background in the composition. This color-based video matting (overlay) technique drops all areas of a selected color (usually blue) from the foreground image and substitutes corresponding areas of the new background.
