constant-Q equalizer

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) Term for graphic and rotary equalizers describing bandwidth behavior as a function of boost/cut levels. The terms Q and bandwidth are interchangeable. The bandwidth remains constant for all boost/cut levels. For constant-Q designs, the area surrounding a boost/cut frequency, known as a “skirt,” varies in direct proportion to the boost/cut level. Small boost/cut levels produce narrow skirts and large boost/cut levels produce wide skirts.
