(n.) A signal processor used primarily in music recording and performance that adds a kind of harmonic distortion found pleasing by most listeners. Even-numbered harmonics tend to make sounds soft, warm, and full. Odd numbered harmonics tend to make sounds metallic, hollow, and bright. Lower-order harmonics control basic timbre, while higher-order harmonics control the “edge” or “bite” of the sound. Harmonic distortion can change the original sound dramatically. Exciters are sometimes known as enhancers.
