(n.) A piece of metal connected to an electronic device. The heat sink dissipates heat and radiates it to the environment to prevent the device from overheating. A heat sink often has fins to increase its surface area. A gelatinous compound is frequently applied between the device and the heat sink to improve thermal conduction.
