(1821–1894) German physicist and acoustician, best known for his 1862 book, On the Sensations of Tone as a Physiological Basis for a Theory of Music. Helmholtz
studied the function of the inner ear and how it distinguishes pitch, various frequencies, tones, timbres, and overtones.
