(n.) The 32-bit host address defined by the Internet Protocol (IP) in RFC 791, STD 5. An Internet address is usually expressed in dotted-decimal notation, such as 128.121.103.76. The term should not be confused with the Fully Qualified Domain Name belonging to a host. The Internet address must be translated into an Ethernet address either by Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) or by constant mapping. The address can be split into a network address and a host number unique to each host on the network, and it can sometimes be split into a subnet address as well. Also known as an IP address.
