(n.) Media access control address; a hardware address belonging to any device connected to a shared media network via the MAC protocol. A MAC address may refer to the low-level address assigned to a device on an Ethernet; such an address would be translated to an Internet Protocol (IP) address via Address Resolution Protocol (ARP). Each network interface card (NIC) is assigned a unique address when manufactured. Also known as Ethernet address.
