(n.) The use of a laser beam to heat a special magnetic recording medium and to reduce its resistance to the reversal of magnetic polarity while a magnet is used to change polarity in selected spots. The medium becomes stable at normal temperatures, makes a relatively permanent record, and is housed in a protective cartridge. Most rewritable optical drives employ MO technology.
