(n.) Software loaded into RAM when a computer boots up, controlling fundamental processes such as saving and retrieving files. An OS may have a command line interface, like DOS. Alternatively, it may have a graphical user interface (GUI), as do the Mac OS and OpenLook for Unix (developed by Sun Microsystems).
