(n.) Any character that represents an operation, or an action, performed on a number or a variable. Common operators include (+) addition, (-) subtraction, (*) multiplication, and (/) division. In query languages that can locate information in databases, Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT, and NOR) are used. Another type is the relational operator, such as less than (<) and greater than (>).
