(n.) The full identifier for a file or a directory in a hierarchical file system, including the drive letter followed by a colon and the nodes from the root directory. An example might be: C:MyStuffdocumentsJoememo.doc. The directories are separated by a path name separator, which is the backslash symbol, in MS-DOS. A path name may be absolute or relative. The part of a path name that follows the last separator is called the base name.
