(n.) An interpreted computer language developed by Larry Wall. Perl is a general-purpose language often used for scanning text and printing formatted reports. Many web developers use Perl. Common Gateway Interfaces (CGIs) and Perl libraries exist for several platforms. The flexibility of Perl makes it well suited for form processing. Perl5 is a major rewrite and enhancement of the widely distributed version 4. Short for Practical Extraction and Report Language or, as some would have it, Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister.
