(n.) Defined in RFC 1171, the Internet standard for transmitting Internet Protocol (IP) packets over serial point-to-point links. In contrast to SLIP, PPP can operate over both asynchronous connections and bit-oriented synchronous systems, dynamically configure connections with a remote network, and test that a link is usable. PPP can be configured to encapsulate AppleTalk, IP, and Internetwork Packet eXchange (IPX) protocols.
