scan resolution

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) The detail of an image as determined by the physical limitations of a scanner as well as by the software settings. Scan resolution is the number of dots per inch (dpi) that the scanner encodes. Higher resolutions create larger files and mean that a scanner must collect more information. It is important to scan at a resolution at least as high as that at which the image will be displayed. Screen resolution is typically only 72 dpi, whereas a standard for laser printing is 300 dpi. High-resolution film scanners can operate at levels above 2400 dpi.
