total harmonic distortion plus noise [THD+N]

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) A common audio measurement. A single pure sine wave frequency is passed through the unit being tested, then patched back into an instrument that measures distortion. THD+N is not the most useful indicator of a unit’s performance. What it tells the user about hum, noise, and interference is useful; however, that information is better conveyed by the signal-to-noise ratio specification.
