(n.) The transport layer protocol used for Ethernet and for the Internet, developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and defined in RFC 793, STD 7. TCP is built on top of Internet Protocol (IP) and is usually combined with it. TCP adds reliable full-duplex communication, flow control, multiplexing, and process-to-process connections. Unlike the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), TCP is connection-oriented and stream-oriented.
