(v.) To test system components for continuity and proper performance and to identify faulty connections and parts. If a visual inspection does not indicate loose connections, voltage levels and logic circuits should be checked. If logic levels are improper, it could be the result of a malfunctioning integrated circuit (IC) or of noise caused by electromagnetic interference. Many systems are equipped with diagnostic test programs that may identify the cause of a problem. If all hardware components and connections have been tested and have passed inspection, the problem may be a bug in the software.
