(n.) A method of defining video signals that separates the luminance (Y) and the chrominance (UV) components. Human vision is much more sensitive to variations in intensity than to variations in color. The YUV encoding process takes advantage of this phenomenon and provides a wider bandwidth for luminance information than for chrominance information. Individually, the letters YUV signify intensity, hue, and value.
