The interval created when one note is on a line and the other note is on the space above the next line up, or the space below the next line down. The inverse is true if a note is on a space. In this case, the 4th is on a line. Ascending from A to D is an example of a 4th. 4ths may be perfect, augmented, or diminished. Perfect 4ths are five half-steps apart.
