A series of chords that generally progress in one of three ways: down a fifth; up a second; and down a third. The corollary to this is that the tonic and dominant chords in a key may be approached from any other chord. The diminished chord built on the major 7th progresses to the tonic. Chord sequences that do not exhibit these types of movement are referred to as retrogressions.
