Minuet and trio form

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

A compound ternary form that begins with a minuet or scherzo followed by a trio. Both sections are typically small binary or ternary forms, with repeated sections. After the trio, the first section is played again, and the instruction given to the performer is “da capo.” Repeats were not generally observed in the second playing of the minuet or scherzo. This form became a common inner movement in classical symphonies, piano sonatas, and string quartets. Da capo arias became popular in the late Baroque period.
