The practice of borrowing pitches from the parallel major or minor key to add chromatic interest in a composition. It changes the quality of chords, adding additional options to the diatonic choices. The minor 3rd, 6th, and 7th are borrowed from the parallel minor into the major key. In minor keys, the same scale degrees may be raised. This facilitates modulation and greatly adds to harmonic interest.
