Motet

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

This is a generic term for vocal music based on a sacred text. The Ordinary of the Mass was not used for motets in early music. They were typically polyphonic and sung by a cappella choirs. In later times, motets were written for solo or chorus, and accompaniments were added. The word originated in the 13th century when “mots” (French for words) were added to music.
