Related to structural form, a musical unit with antecedent and consequent phrases. Most periods have two phrases, and the first phrase must end with a weaker cadence than the final cadence. Although most often consisting of just two phrases, periods may be constructed with more than two phrases. It is a phrase group if the final cadence is not the strongest.
