Rhythm and Blues

Also known as “soul music.” Black American popular music dating from the late 1940s. R&B artists had to fight for airtime in a segregated society, but their music was in great demand. Some of the best-known artists were Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, the Temptations, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Tina Turner. Their music was a mixture of Blues and Rock. R&B evolved over the decades to become a very different style, one that does not resemble the music of these early pioneers. However, this is true of most musical genres.
