(n.) The black part of the video signal that normally falls otside the area that is visible on a TV screen. A video capture card will often grab some of the edge surrounding the image as it encodes. This is sometimes referred to as edge noise. When viewing video on a monitor in “overscan” mode, edge blanking is visible.  Also known as “vertical edge blanking.”
