(n.) Change in the frequency of a carrier signal that expresses information based on the rate and degree of change. FM has been a common technique for sound synthesis since it was proposed by John Chowning in 1971. The Yamaha DX-7 family of synthesizers used FM synthesis exclusively to generate sounds.
