Internet Message Access Protocol [IMAP]

(pronounced “EYE-map”) (n.) The method by which a client can access electronic mail messages on a server. IMAP permits manipulation of remote mailboxes but does not specify a means of posting mail. This function is handled by a mail transfer protocol such as Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).
