« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) An HTML tag that belongs in the portion of a document, providing information about a page that is not displayed in the browser when the page is viewed. The type of editing program used to create a page is often identified in the metatag. Information placed in the metatag of the home page of a site is used by search engines to classify the site. Capturing metatags from all the sites on the web is the work of spiders and bots.
