proportional Q (variable-Q equalizer)

(n.) In an audio equalizer with this feature, the bandwidth that is affected by boosting or cutting a frequency is inversely proportional to the degree that it is altered. A small adjustment in the level is applied to a wide bandwidth. A drastic amplification or attenuation is applied to a very narrow bandwidth around the center frequency. Also known as “variable Q.”
