(n.) A set of informational documents begun in 1969. RFCs state standards to be followed by those who develop software for the Internet. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) approved all of the early RFCs. A comprehensive list of RFCs appears at http://asg.web.cmu.edu/rfc/. See the table for RFCs in common use:

  • RFC 792 defines Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP).
  • RFC 822 defines the Internet standard format for electronic mail message headers. This format is also defined in STD 11. RFC 822 evolved from RFC 733.
  • RFC 959 contains the official specifications for file transfer protocol (FTP).
  • RFC 1661 defines Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP).
