(STS) (n.) The equivalent of a Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) optical carrier (OC), an electrical signal that is converted to an optical signal before transmission over optical fiber. An STS frame consists of the Synchronous Payload Envelope (SPE), Section Overhead (SOH), Line Overhead (LOH), Path Overhead (POH), and Payload. The SOH and LOH combined make up the Transport Overhead (TOH).
