texture

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) A surface with varied intensities. It is often used as a region descriptor in image analysis and in computer vision. Texture may be described in statistical, structural, and spectral terms. A texture can be defined by the statistical properties of its gray levels. Structural descriptors characterize a texture as consisting of primitive textural elements (texels) that are regularly arranged on the surface. The Fourier spectrum may be used to describe the global periodicity of the gray levels of a surface by identifying high-energy peaks in the spectrum.
