vertical interval time code [VITC]

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(pronounced “VIT-see”) (n.) The insertion of SMPTE time code into the vertical blanking interval (VBI) between the two fields of a video frame. This method eliminates errors that may occur from tape stretch, which is a problem when longitudinal time code (LTC) is used. Unlike LTC, VITC can be read when a tape is paused. VITC appears as a row of dots on top of each video field and allows an operator to locate a specific frame.
