VU meter

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) Volume unit meter; a measuring device used in audio recording and broadcasting to indicate amplitude levels relative to a standard. A VU is a form of decibel (dB) reference. It equals 1 milliwatt of power that meets with a 600-ohm load. VU meters are calibrated in order to indicate 0 dB as the maximum undistorted signal level, with a red zone for levels that exceed that point.
