(n.) A graphical user interface (GUI), or operating system, patented by Microsoft for use with personal computers running MS-DOS. MS Windows is loosely based on the point-and-click, icon-based interface invented by Apple Computer and deployed on all Macintosh computers. Windows incorporates device drivers needed for multimedia functionality. Later generations of Windows leave behind most of the dependence on MS-DOS that the original system was built on.
