Advanced Video Coding [AVC]

(n.) Refers to the Advanced Video Coding (AVC) compression standard MPEG-4 part 10. It is based on Discrete Cosine Transfer (DCT), variable block-size segmentation of 4×4 and 8×8 Macroblocks, and forward picture prediction between frames. Standardized by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) in conjunction with the MPEG group, it became the most widely used codec for streaming by YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Vimeo, and iTunes in 2019. The required bandwidth for a 4K video broadcast over H.264 is 32 megabits per second (mbps), while the same 4K content can be delivered by H.265 at 15 mbps. It is expected to be replaced by H.265, High Efficiency Video Coding (HVEC) because this evolution of the standard allows higher quality at lower bandwidths.
