serial

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(adj.) Describes operations pertaining to a series or describes the sequential, time-based passage of data. Serial ports on computers process data one bit at a time in an orderly fashion as they pass information to or from input and output devices, such as modems and printers. The term serial interface implies that each bit is sent sequentially, as opposed to having groups of bits sent simultaneously in a parallel interface.
