The position of each individual pitch in a given scale, from 1 through 7. In major or minor keys, the names given to the scale degrees are: (1) Tonic, (2) Supertonic, (3) Mediant, (4) Subdominant, (5) Dominant, (6) Submediant, and (7) Leading Tone. In the case of a minor 7th scale degree created by the descending melodic minor, the 7th is the Subtonic.
