anonymous FTP

« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX

(n.) Anonymous file transfer protocol; Internet hosts often provide this interactive service, which allows a user to transfer documents, files, programs, and other archived data using FTP. Users log in under the user name ftp or anonymous with their email address as the password. This grants access to a directory hierarchy containing publicly accessible files, normally in the pub subdirectory. A reference to a file available by FTP may also take the form of a URL beginning with the letters ftp and followed by a colon.
