impedance« BACK TO DICTIONARY INDEX
(n.) The combined effect of capacitance, inductance, and resistance on a signal. According to Ohm’s law, voltage is the product of current and resistance at a given frequency. Microphones are differentiated by whether they operate on a high- or low-impedance circuit. A low-impedance condenser microphone is more sensitive than a high-impedance dynamic microphone. A low-impedance microphone requires phantom power or a battery.
