(n.) A male audio connector with a 0.25-inch diameter. A phone plug is used to terminate the cables connecting most high-impedance and line level instruments and signal processors, such as electric guitars, synthesizers, and amplifiers. The monophonic (mono) version allows two wires to be connected to a tip and a sleeve. A stereo version permits connection of three wires that have a tip, ring, and sleeve configuration. A female receptacle for this type of plug is called a phone jack. On consumer audio equipment, such as portable CD players and cassette decks, this style of connector has a 0.125-inch diameter and is called a miniature (mini) phone plug.
