(n.) A type of data file with characters that are printable letters, numbers, and symbols exclusively. The ASCII character set is most often used, and no invisible control characters are included. A text file could be created by a text editor and imported into a word processor, but it would not contain formatting information. See also binary file or Rich Text Format.
